Hotel Star Residence: Review of Unmanned Hotel in Fukuoka (Japan)

About Hotel Star Residence

Hotel Star Residence is an independent, botique unmanned hotel located in Gofukumachi, Fukuoka. Featuring apartments (also known as an aparthotel), there are apartments of all shapes and sizes spread over 4 floors (approximately 4 per floor), so everyone from solo travellers to larger groups will find something here.

Location

Hotel Star Residence is located in Gofukumachi, Hakata Ward. This is one of the traditional areas of the city, and there are many shrines and temples in the area. Otherwise, this area is mostly residential with some shopping and larger businesses on the main streets that link to Hakata, Nakasu and Tenjin.

The hotel is located a couple of minutes walking from Gofukumachi Station, which has a direct link to Tenjin. There are also many bus stops in the area, connecting it to almost everywhere in Fukuoka.

Hotel Star Residence sits on a side street away from any noise and traffic. There are some small restaurants and bars in the area as well as a supermarket (Sunny) that is near Gofukumachi Station.

About the space

The apartment that I rented was a single, so only meant for one person. It was shaped like a long rectangle. You entered near the middle, which was the kitchen area. The kitchen was fully equipped with a stove and microwave, including the utensils and a couple of pots and pans to be able to cook. There was also a full-sized fridge.

To the right of the kitchen was a decent sized room through a sliding door with a closet. However, rather than being a bedroom, it had been made into an office with a desk and office chair.

To the left of the kitchen was what I originally assume was the “dining area”, which is actually where the bed was. There was also a TV in this area. Further along was a vanity mirror set up with two doors: one to a wetroom (shower, bathtub) and the other two a separate toilet (with bidet).

The style of the apartment was very modern. It seems that the hotel was built within the past couple of years or has had extensive renovations as everything seemed very new.

The good

Here is what I said on Booking.com:

This small hotel is on side streets in Gofukumachi, out of the way but not far from Gion and Hakata Station. You can also walk to Nakasu and Tenjin in less than 30 minutes. This is an unmanned hotel, which means you do not interact with the staff. Instead, you check in and out via a tablet in the reception area. I had an apartment for 1 person. It was spacious for its size, well laid out and had everything you need when travelling without being cluttered. It was very comfortable and the area is very quiet, so you do not have to worry about noise while you are there.

The bad

Here is what I said on Booking.com:

The reception and the rest of the hotel are not in the same area. A small sign says “Hotel Star Residence” on the side of the building where you enter an alleyway. Halfway down this alley is the entrance to the reception. Once you check in and get your key, you need to leave this room, go back to the alley and then walk to the end where there is a set of automatic doors. This is where the rooms are.

Verdict

I would happily stay here again! I enjoyed my stay here, it was comfortable, and very well located. Check in and check out were easy, the neighbourhood was quiet and there is nothing that I can think about that I would have changed about my stay here.
