SO City Hotel Adults Only: A comprehensive review (St Julian’s, Malta)

About SO City Hotel Adults Only

SO City Hotel Adults Only is a three-star hotel that caters to adults – primarily due to its location (more on this below) but also due to its layout. This 10 story building (with a rooftop bar and pool) consists almost exclusively of double rooms with the 10th floor being the only floor with suites. This means that each room is meant for two people – which is why Booking.com says that “Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 8.8 for a two-person trip” (at the time of writing).

Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and room service, along with free WiFithroughout the property. The accommodation features nightclub (attached to one side) and a concierge service.

The hotel will provide guests with air-conditioned rooms with a desk, a coffee machine, a minibar, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with a shower as well as bed linen and towels. All rooms have a kettle, while certain rooms have a balcony and others also boast city views.

A buffet, continental or Full English/Irish breakfast can be enjoyed in the dedicated “restaurant” area with its own button in the lifts. Breakfast ranges from fruits and salads, cold meats, hot sausages, scrambled and boiled eggs to pastries, cereals and bread/toast.

Location

SO City Hotel Adults Only is an adult-only hotel situated in the heart of St. Julian’s, the heart of nightlife in Malta. Located on the main street with the major clubs and bars of the area, you will have no problems having a good time after dark.

Popular points of interest also include Balluta Bay Beach, Portomaso Marina and Love Monument. Malta International Airport is 9 km/5.6 miles from SO City Hotel Adults Only and a one-way taxi journey costs €20 (at time of writing).

Furthermore St. Julians is a transport hub, meaning you can get to most parts of the island directly. For example Valletta (where most routes end) is approximately 20 minutes away. You can use several routes, including numbers 13, 14 and 16, all of which leave from the nearest bus stop – San Giljan in front of Pendergardens. Note: buses going to Valletta go from in front of the Wenzhou Asian and Latin American supermarket. Those going away from Valletta go from Welbee’s Supermarket in the Pendergardens building.

SO City Hotel Adults Only: the good

SO City Hotel is located on the main nightlife street in St Julian’s, so if you are looking for that sort of holiday, this is the perfect hotel. If you aren’t, that is still ok as the hotel has excellent soundproofing and provides comfortable soft foam earplugs. It is also well connected to other parts of the island via the public transportation and taxi systems. We enjoyed the breakfast (7-11 a.m.) and were very comfortable in our double room (the most basic and numerous one the hotel provides).

I booked through Booking.com and had absolutely no issues. Being a Genius Tier 3 member, I had not only a discount on the overall price (since it was a qualifying hotel) but also had breakfast included for free! And it was a delicious breakfast =D

SO City Hotel Adults Only:

the bad

As we were on the 9th floor, the water pressure in the shower was not great. Also the temperature would quickly fluctuate between scalding hot and freezing cold. It was easy to get used to but somewhat annoying. Additionally the push knob in our shower that changes the water from the wand to the overhead shower head and back was not working correctly. It would pop out, changing the water to the wand seemingly randomly. We sometimes had to hold it in position to have the water come from the desired outlet.

What I did while staying at SO City Hotel Adults Only

I was in Malta for 3 full days – primarily to meet and catch up with a friend that I had made while studying in Japan. We chose to travel on a budget and SO City Hotel Adults Only was one of the cheapest while still being well located.

The first day we were there, we took the bus into Valletta and spent the day exploring the city.

The second day we relaxed on the rooftop of the hotel (where the pool and bar are located) in the morning. In the afternoon we took ourselves to Mdina, the fortified city in the centre of Malta that was a filming location for Game of Thrones.

The third day we did a day-long boat tour from Sliema to Comino and the Blue and Crystal Lagoons.

Staying at SO City Hotel Adults Only made it very easy to get around due how well connected it was to everything via public transport. Valletta, Mdina and Sliema were all a direct bus ride away. We did not need to woorry about changing and buses came regularly.

Things to do in the area

St Julian’s is very centrally located on many bus lines. The only place that is even more convenient is Valletta, where most buses start or terminate. During my 4-day trip when we stayed at this hotel, we did the following:

Verdict

I would happily stay here again!
