Northern Coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula: A roadtrip

On a trip to Iceland I was fortunate to be able to spend two weeks there. Part of the two weeks included the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, some of which I have posted about in previous posts. This post is focused more on the scenery and the driving, especially of the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which is less travelled than the south.

The southern half of the peninsula is a lot flatter than the northern coast. However once you cross the mountains, the north hugs the coastline and there is very little flat land. Instead you see a lot more souring mountains, beuatiful valleys and lots of sheep hanging on for deer life!

While there is less civilisation on the northern coast, there is still a lot to see. For fans of Game of Thrones (or interesting geometry in nature), the triangular mountain known in Iceland as Kirkjufell or by fans as “Arrow Mountain” is here. It sits on its own peninsula off the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and can be accessed with Route 54.

There is also the Kolgrafarfjörður, or bridge that looks like a sword. While there is also a view point, unfortunately you can only really see the sword shape from an aerial view, such as in a helicopter or (more likely) drone photography.

Farther east there are countless waterfalls and small valleys in amongst the mountains the make this a very scenic and beautiful drive.

Below is the video of our drive from Guesthouse Hof in the south, over the mountain pass via the Snæfellsnes View Point, then heading east on the coastal road.
