About Hotel Smyrlabjörg
Hotel Smyrlabjörg lies on Iceland’s ringroad – Route 1 – in the southeast region. This 3-star hotel caters to guests looking to stay in the southeast region of the country; a tour bus-load of trippers also stayed at this hotel the night that we stayed (fortunately arriving late and leaving early!).
Hotel Smyrlabjörg has a range of rooms that accommodate up to 4 people per room. These can be found in two buildings: either the main building at the back (looking from the parking lot) or the alterate building (to the right). The larger rooms are in the main building on the upper floor.
There is not much in the way of civilisation in this area. As a result it also has one of the few restaurants in the area, so guests from other accommodations also come here for dinner.
While the hotel does have free WiFi, this is only guaranteed in the common areas. For example we could connect to the WiFi in the room but the connection was very weak.
Location
Hotel Smyrlabjörg lies on Iceland’s ringroad – Route 1 – in the southeast region. It is about 25 minutes driving east of Diamond Beach – where icebergs wash up on the beach – and approximately 1 hour west of Vestrahorn.
This part of Iceland features very little land between the highlands and Vatnajökull glacier. As a result out front of the hotel you can see the ocean and the mountains and glacier are visible from the back.

About the space
Hotel Smyrlabjörg is decorated in a country house style with lots of wood and animals. This can also be seen in the rooms. Especially for Iceland, the rooms at Hotel Smyrlabjörg were extremely spacious. We stayed in a room for 4 people; each of us could easily swing a cat by the tail without any fears of collision.
The room had an ensuite bathroom with shower, toilet, etc. and came with the standard amentities for a 3-star hotel. This was also one of the few hotels that we booked that also included breakfast in the price of the stay. The breakfast was an all-you-can-eat buffet located in the large restaurant/dining space next to the hotel lobby.
The restaurant serves breakfast (to hotel guests only), lunch and dinner with a wide range of food options for each meal. While it is on the more expensive side, it is the only place to eat in the area.
The good
The rooms were very large and spacious; for 4 people who had been travelling together for nearly two weeks by this point, it was good to not feel cramped in the same room. The food was also good; there was a lot more variety than in other hotels and restaurants we had eaten prior to this one.
The bad
The only drawback of Hotel Smyrlabjörg would be for people who need a strong WiFi connection in their rooms. We were able to connect to but unable to use the WiFi available for guests. I think the main reason was due to the construction of the building, which obviously did not take WiFi propogation into account.

Verdict
My stay at Hotel Smyrlabjörg was comfortable on the whole and I would stay here again if I were in the area. I have to admit that there was nothing special about our stay and it did not really stand out from other places where we had stayed during this trip.
