If you head to Iceland’s northwestern region, in addition to the amazing scenery, you can sometimes find whales in the Westfjords (or Western Fjords). Many people do this by going on whale-watching tours while others (spoiler: me!) are lucky enough to see them simply by driving around the fjords!
In our September 2025 trip to Iceland, we spent a couple of days up in the Westfjords. We had the fortune of seeing not only whales in the Westfjords but also seals in Þingeyri!
There a couple of different types of whales that you can see in Iceland. The most common are Minke and Humpback whales but 20 different species have been reported in Iceland’s waters, including blues, orcas, fin, sei, grey, pilot, beluga, narwahl, and sperm whales. The best time to see them are in the summer months as they spend this season in cooler waters in the Arctic, which are rich in nutrients.
The ones we saw were humpback, which is the most common ones seen from the shore.
