If you like lighthouses and/or enjoy Halloween, then Svörtuloft Lighthouse on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula might be the place for you. Located on the western edge of the peninsula, it offers some beautiful views of the ocean as well as Snæfellsjökull, the active volcano with a glacier that gives the Snæfellsjökull National Park its name.

Located off of Route 574, the route that goes through the national park, the access road is Route 579, which is a very bumpy and completely unpaved road. Like most of Iceland, you definitely need a 4×4 vehicle to drive here, and a high-clearance one would be better than a standard vehicle.

Svörtuloft Lighthouse sits on the top of a cliff warning ships of the danger of the land here. The cliffs have a lot of small inlets and even some caves and some of the cliffs have been eroded by the ocean, creating archways that are visible from the Svörtuloft Lighthouse viewpoint.

We had a very windy time at Svörtuloft Lighthouse with winds gusting up to 42 mph / 68 kph! In fact several people were blown over and you had to use the rails just to stay upright. In fact it was a bit of a miracle that we were able to take so many photos! I did so mostly by wrapping myself to the rail.
