Route 54 – the main road around the Snæfellsnes peninsula – goes through the mountains that give the peninsula its name. Similar to places like Rest and Be Thankful, on this mountain pass are two pull off areas where you can look down the valley. This view captures not only the mountains and valley that lead to the mountain pass but also the coastline, and if you are lucky, even Reykjavik in the distance.
If you are driving from Reykjavik, drive north on Route 1 until you reach Borgarnes, which is where Route 54 starts. From here head west along this route, along the mountain chain, past Búðakirkja and then you will start to climb. This is the beginning of the valley that leads to the mountain pass.
If you continue through the pass, you can visit other towns such as Ólafsvik and Heilissandur as well as see places such as SkarðsvÃk Beach, Svörtuloft Lighthouse and Lóndrangar on Route 574.
It had been raining slightly while we were at Búðakirkja but by the time we got to the pass (about 15 minutes later with all the stops thrown in), we had some nice sun peaking through the rain clouds which added a lot to the atmosphere of the Snæfellsnesvegur View Point. I would definitely recommend stopping here if the weather permits. We could not see as far as Reykjavik that day but apparently it is possible on a very clear day!
