Residence Hotel Hakata 19: Apartment Hotel Style in Tenjin, Fukuoka (Japan)

About Residence Hotel Hakata 19

Residence Hotel Hakata 19 is an unmanned hotel run by Leading Property Management (LPM) near Tenjin in Fukuoka, Japan. It is part of an accommodation portfolio that includes (at the time of writing) 5 other ‘Residence Hotel Hakata’s in the Tenjin and Hakata areas and two in Sapporo in Hokkaido. The group also manages monthly rental accommodations.

As an unmanned hotel, check-in and check-out are done via a touchscreen panel in the lobby. When guests make a reservation, they are sent a link to enter the details of the person/people staying in the apartment. Once this is complete, a QR code will be issued, which will be used to access and confirm the reservation on this touch panel. Once this happens, it gives you the code to get into the building and the code to get into your room. There are no keys provided or needed.

Location

Residence Hotel Hakata 19 is located in Maizuru, just north of Tenjin Station (underground trains) and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station (overground trains and long-distance buses). Maizuru and Tenjin are the social heart of Fukuoka, with many bars, restaurants, clubs, shops, cafés, and more nearby. One example is Sushiro, a conveyor sushi restaurant less than 50 metres from the building.

This street is also a hub for parties and clubbing at weekends, so it can be a bit loud until the early morning hours. If you are sensitive to noise, I recommend using earplugs these days. Otherwise, during the week, it is tranquil.

About the Apartment

At Residence Hotel Hakata 19, which is an aparthotel (apartment-hotel), you rent an entire apartment in this unmanned hotel. This means you have a bedroom, a kitchen/dining area, a toilet, a shower, an entrance area with a cupboard, etc.

It also has a washing machine, iron and ironing board for your laundry needs. Enough laundry detergent is provided for one wash of clothing. If you need more, you need to buy it yourself, which you can do at nearby convenience stores or department stores such as Aeon.

While it is an entire apartment, LPM says not to use the kitchen for cooking and does not provide cooking utensils. Otherwise, forks, spoons, plates, bowls, mugs, and glasses are all available. There is also a microwave and fridge to heat food and a kettle for boiling water.

The good

Here is what I said on Booking.com:

I had an excellent stay here. It was in a great location, a very comfortable apartment, not loud or noisy, perfect for what I wanted. The bed was also comfortable. However, this apartment is good for two people rather than four. There is a futon for two extra people to sleep on, but there is very little floor space to put it anywhere.

The bad

Here is what I said on Booking.com:

My only complaint is that you are not allowed to use the kitchen. A sign says “no cooking (except boiling water)” in 4 different languages. I really wanted to stay in a place with a kitchen so I could make meals, so this was a disappointment. Otherwise, there were no other negative points.

Response to my review

Verdict

I had a good stay at Residence Hotel Hakata 19, so I would stay here again. I would prefer to find a place like this with a usable kitchen, but otherwise, I have no complaints about this space and would be happy to stay here again.

  1. I’m surprised the registration and check in hasn’t taken off in the USA! That’s a great way to do it. Is there any staff available if you have questions or need help?
    … Someone you know

  2. There is a management office in the city and they do respond to messages within a couple of hours. In an emergency they do also have a phone number that you can call.
