Located in the town of Hveragerði, Ölverk Pizza and Brewery has been brewing its own beer and firing pizzas since 2017. During a stop in southern Iceland on our way to Bru Horsefarm and Strokkur Geyser, we decided to have lunch here as it was also near the Sunnumörk shopping centre that has the continental divide running through the building.
About Ölverk Pizza and Brewery
Started in 2017 by a husband-wife team along with a friend, Ölverk Pizza and Brewery has brewed craft beer since 2017. It specialises in small batch brewing and uses geothermal energy in the process, which is extremely common in Iceland. Since 2022 you can also buy bottles to take home with you (thanks to Iceland’s new liquor laws passed in 2022).
The opening hours are Sunday – Thursday: 11:30 – 22:00 and Friday – Saturday: 11:30 – 23:00. The kitchen closes at 21:00 every day. It is locted just off of Route 1 here (Google Maps).
Beer Selection
When we were there, the tap beer selection was as follows:
- Hrekkur Festbier – 6.1% ABV 25 IBU Ölverk
- Kólumkilli (Nitro) Stout – Irish Dry – 4% ABV Ölverk
- Rauðihver Red Ale – 5.5% ABV 28 IBU Ölverk
- LÆTI – 4.2% ABV Ölverk
- Eilífur Pilsner – 5.2% ABV 28 IBU Ölverk
- Rótandi IPA – American – 6.5% ABV 35 IBU Ölverk

We decided to order a flight to try the beers, which included 4 beers. Unfortunately the one I really wanted to try (Rauðihver Red Ale) was out, so instead we chose the Hrekkur Festbier, Kólumkilli (Nitro) Stout, LÆTI and Eilífur Pilsner. I would rate all of the ones that we tried to be excellent in their field.
Ölverk Pizza and Brewery also offers some international beers from other breweries. You can find their current beer menu here.
There are also regular and seasonal cocktails available. You can find these on their fod menu.
Food Menu
Being a pizza, the primary food on offer is pizza although there are non-pizza options as well. You can find the full food menu here.
The first time we visited, we ordered numbers 13 and 17. Number 13 is white sauce, cheese, garlic oil, blue cheese, pepper cheese, and brie with a red currant gelé on the side. Number 17 is sauce, cheese, chorizo mince, pickled onions, pepper cheese, cruchy jalapeño, Ölverk chilli-nut-crisp & lime-black pepper mayonnaise.
The second time we ordered 5 and 16. Number 5 is sauce, cheese, pepperoni, bacon, black pepper cheese and Gilla hot sauce. Number 16 is white sauce, cheese, brie, blue cheese, walnuts, pear, spring onion, honey and chili flakes (so it is somewhat spicy).
Our verdict was that all 4 pizzas were delicious! As a group of 4 we devoured both pizzas each time, feeling satisfied and replete. On our first visit we also tried the spicy cheese-stuffed breadsticks with blue cheese sauce – to die for! We did not have any kind of appetiser the second time we went as it was earlier in the day.
Verdict: 10/10 would go back
Not only was the pizza delicious but the beer was also really nice. We shared the original flight and each had different opinions on the beers. As I prefer darker beers, I liked the stout. My parents prefer lighter beers; one liked the festbeer the best and the other preferred the pilsner. I would absolutely go back and try the red ale that they did not have at the time. I also enjoyed the LÆTI which had a citrussy tang to it. That is the beer I had the second time we went.
