Hótel Tjarnir: Nestled Between Two Mountains (Iceland)

About Hótel Tjarnir

Hótel Tjarnir is a 3-star hotel offering free WiFi, free on-site parking, and the option for breakfast, which is not included in the price of the room but can be added per person for an additional fee.

There is no reception; instead you get your key from a lockbox to the right of the outer door on the outside of the building.

When you enter the main door, there is a common area that is taken up primarily by the kitchen, which anyone may use. It is equipped with a stove, fridge and vending machines. Anyone may use these as long as you are respectful of noise and maintaining the space.

Location

Hótel Tjarnir is located in Ljósavatn, approximately 20 minutes to the east of Akureyri using Route 1 – Iceland’s ring road. Nestled in a valley between the mountains, it sits next to the school for the local area.

About the space

We stayed in a double room; rooms at Hótel Tjarnir are typically meant for 2 people but a third can be added to some rooms. All rooms (of which there are about 20 according to the floor map) are located on the ground floor as this is a one-floor villa. It is next to the school and looks like it may have been a dormitory (or similar) at one point. In fact you park in the combined parking lot.

They came equipped with the standard hotel amenities for a 3-star hotel: kettle, bedding, towels, soap, shampoo, and heating via radiators. There is also a desk, phone, desktop lamp and desk chair.

As you walk in, there is also a large wardrobe/area for clothes and a suitcase or two. Directly straight is the bathroom and on your left (or right depending on hte room) is the bedroom area.

The bathrooms come with showers but no bathtubs. There is also a radiator here as well as a towel rack.

The good

The room was veryh comfortable. The beds were comfortable, the shower was hot with good water pressure (and drained well!) and the temperature was easy to maintain. The building had good insulation, even when it snowed.

The bad

The one slight negative point is not really anything that the hotel can do about. When the school is in session, there will be children and adults in the school next door. Because the buildings are very close, there is not much in the way of privacy, so I would recommend drawing the curtains so that the sun does not wake you up and so that way you ahve some privacy in the morning if you are not up before people arrive.

What I did while there

Here are some things to do in the area:

Scenery

There was also some beautiful scenery around the hotel, which is the starting point for several hikes in the area. Here are some photos, including of the snow that fell the night we stayed there:

Verdict

I would be happy to stay here again in the future. It was a basic hotel but very comfortable and good for one night.
