Hótel Snæfell – Hotel by Aldan: A review (Iceland)

About Hótel Snæfell

Hótel Snæfell (or Snæfell – Hotel by Aldan) is an accommodation set in a 3-storey house built in 1908. Originally a house for musician, it became the local post office and was transformed into a hotel in 1943. It has also hosted a taxi rank, a restaurant and at one point a shoemaker workshop

More recently the house was renovated in 2007 and a lot of effort was put into restoring the rooms to their original state. In 2013 three new rooms were added on the ground floor: these rooms are more spacious and modern and are the “superior” rooms offered.

The reception for the hotel is not in the building with the rooms. Instead it is closer to the entrance to Seydisfjördur at the Aldan Hotel and Restaurant (Google Maps link).

Location

Hótel Snæfell is located in Seydisfjördur in eastern Iceland. The hotel sits right on the harbour, giving unobstructed view up and down the fjord. Here you can see the ferry, which not only connects Seydisfjördur to Reykjavik by boat but also the Faroe Islands, The Shetlands, the UK, and Denmark.

On occasion you also see Atlantic Gray Seals – we did not however.

About the space

We stayed in one of the superior rooms, which can sleep 4 people in one queen-sized and one double-sized bed. Like a normal hotel room, the room had the sleeping area and then also the bathroom.

The superior room comes with heating, a shower, hair dryer, toilet, bathroom, desk, kettle, cups, towels, and bed linen.

Parking is also right next to the hotel.

The good

The superior hotel room was extremely comfortable. It was on the ground floor at the back of the house (with the front door being external), making it easy to accesss. Access was given via a code, which you put into the electronic lock on the door. In other words there were no keys or key cards (so no worries about losing them!).

The heater worked well, the water pressure was great and the water was hot!

The bad

The one thing that I did not like about the room was that the double-sized bed was sideways in the alcove, meaning that one person had to sleep against the wall. Other than that, there were no negative points!

What I did while there

Here are some things to do in the area:

Verdict

I would definitely stay at Hótel Snæfell again if I am in the area!
