Hotel Osakaya: A Review (Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan)

About Hotel Osakaya

Hotel Osakaya is an older, independent business hotel in downtown Aizu-Wakamatsu in the historic and shopping areas.

Hotel Osakaya is a three-star hotel with a lobby and reception on the ground floor and a restaurant on the second floor. The upper three floors are comprised of single, double and triple rooms.

Hotel Osakaya is one of those hotels where you leave your (physical) key at the front desk if you go out in the morning. However, as the desk closes around 10 p.m., they do not ask for your key in the afternoon or evening if you return later than 10 p.m.

Location

Hotel Osakaya is located in Aizu-Wakamatsu, the capital city of the Aizu region in Fukushima Prefecture. Aizu is known for producing fruits, vegetables, and staples such as rice and buckwheat.

The hotel is located in the Omachi district between the Nanokamachi and Higashiakaemachi districts. Both are known for good food and stores that sell local, regional, and national goods. It is also easy to reach by public transport, either the long-distance buses from Fukushima City that stop the next street over or the local buses that connect with Aizu-Wakamatsu and Nishi-Wakamatsu train stations.

About the room

Hotel Osakaya is an older business hotel with more space than a newer-built business hotel. I booked a double room because the single room was completely booked. The double room had two twin beds, a nice, sizeable (and comfortable) reclining chair, a television, refrigerator, kettle, and two large, spacious wardrobes.

Fortunately, I was placed in a corner room with even more space than a standard room. However, the trade-off is that the WiFi was not as strong.

The good

I booked this hotel through るるぶトラベル and have not been asked to review it, so I have not left one yet. However, I would have said something like:

The room was very spacious, the staff were polite, and the hotel was extremely well located. I was able to do everything that I wanted to do in Aizu while staying here.

The bad

I booked this hotel through るるぶトラベル and have not been asked to review it, so I have not left one yet. However, I would have said something like:

The hotel felt a bit old and dated, although the quality was still good. I think in the next few years it will need a renovation. However, at the moment at least, I don’t really have any negatives. The closest I can come is that the bed was a bit too hard for my tastes.

What I did while there

Verdict

I would absolutely stay here again. Its central location, good connections to public transport, and being surrounded by good restaurants make it a desirable option in Aizu-Wakamatsu.
