Not far from the famous Senjojiki Coast juts Cape Yukiai into the Sea of Japan on Aomori’s west coast. This small cape, which sits above the rest of the coastline, has some amazing views of the surrounding area.

The peninsula starts roughly from the JR Gono Line train tracks (where there is a parking lot) and is just under 1 km long (0.6 miles) long. The majority of this sits about 50 m (164 ft) above sea level. It has some open grassy areas as well as wooded ones with trails. These trails do lead down to the rocky beach below.

Cape Yukiai has been used since historic times as an area for fishing, and the cape today has a small fishing port on its northern side. It is a very small operation that supports the fishing needs of nearby settlements, such as Hiroto (the town that hosts it) and the Fukaura area.

From Cape Yukiai, you can look up (roughly northeast) and down (roughly southwest) the coast. In the distance down the coast you can see Oiwa Rock, the next major feature of the coastline that also hosts a shinto shrine!

While the train line passes directly by the head of the peninsula, the nearest train stations are Hiroto Station (2.1 km/1.3 miles – approximately 30 minutes walking) and Fukaura Station (3.2 km/2 miles – approximately 45 minutes walking). While these distances aren’t large and are definitely walkable, the roads are not pedestrian friendly, so if you decide to walk there, take extreme caution. There may be some trails closer to the coast that take longer but would be safer as you would not meet cars. If so, definitely take these instead.

If you are driving, there is a free car park at the head of the peninsula.
