About Beppu Daiiti Hotel
Beppu Daiiti Hotel is a 3-star hotel located in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan.
The hotel sits a bit back from the road, giving it a welcoming feel as a garden of sorts with benches has been installed out front. In practice this is where people who are inclined to do so smoke.
Simply furnished, Beppu Daiiti Hotel offers affordable accommodation with massage services, a pay parking lot and WiFi is accessible throughout the property.
To get beyond the lobby and use the lift, you need to use your keycard to go to the desired floor.
Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 8.5 for a two-person trip.
I found this hotel on booking.com. Here is the direct link to Beppu Daiiti Hotel.
Location
It is also 1 minute from the JR Beppu station, which is convenient for the trains going to Oita City and north to Kitakyushu. JR Beppu Station is also a transport hub for local buses, so it is easy to go around the town and to nearby towns.
The hotel sits on the road that runs along the western side of the tracks. In fact directly outside of my window on the opposite side of the street were the tracks themselves, so I could sit and watch the infrequent trains go by. The soundproofing of the hotel was moderately good and trains stop running in the late evening, so it is unlikely to disturb you during normal sleeping hours.
Hotel Daiiti Beppu is a 10-minute walk from main historic Beppu area and a 15-minute walk from B-Con Plaza. This is where most of the restaurants in this part of Beppu are located. Alternatively you can head farther west to Beppu park, which also has some more restaurants and cafés, although these are more likely to close early.

About the space
Air-conditioned guestrooms are fitted with a fridge, a work desk and a flat-screen TV. The en suite bathroom comes with toiletries and a bathtub. Ironing facilities are available on each floor to use freely.
Guests can enjoy massage services at the hotel. Self-service laundry services are available for a fee. Luggage storage can also be found at the 24-hour front desk.
The hotel also has a limited number of bikes to rent during your stay there as well. Simply speak to reception for more information.
The hotel provides Japanese and Western style breakfast for an additional fee. I do not usually eat breakfast, so I did not take advantage of this during my stay. However on the usual hotel booking websites (booking.com, agoda.com, expedia.com, etc), the highlights always mention that the breakfast was rated highly, so that has to count for something.
The good
Excellent, will stay here again
The hotel is located very close to the train station. While you can sometimes here the trains go by (very muffled, even though my room was the closest to the tracks), it was very peaceful. It took me 2 minutes to walk from the station to the hotel.
The bad
There were some lights in the room that could not be turned off, such as the lights in the light switches. This is not necessarily a problem but because they were right next to the bed and I am light-sensitive, they sometimes made falling asleep difficult.
Response to my review
Here is what the owners had to say:
Dear Customer, Thankyou so much for the feedback. All lights of the room can be turned off. The switch of light which is closest to the bed is pretty difficult to find out at times. I apologise for the inconvinience. Please feel free to contact our staff during your stay at our hotel next time. Best Regards
Note: the lights that I meant were the ones built into the light switches and therefore could not be turnt off. They were also larger squares rather than a tiny LED that you find in most chargers and the light shone right onto the area of the bed where the pillows are (and hence your head).
What I did while there
I stayed in Beppu for one week during the autumn. It was a one-week break from my Japanese studies (How to learn Japanese: my journey) and I wanted to have a relaxing time in a town known for its Hot Springs and escape into nature.
In addition to some much needed down time where I read, here are some of the things that I did:
Verdict
On the whole I was happy with Beppu Daiiti Hotel. It was comfortable although the bed was a bit hard. Then again I like a soft bed, which is very unusual in Japan, so this is something I struggle with at most hotels when travelling through the land of the rising sun.
