I wanted to apologise for not posting recently. Life has been hectic and busy recently: I moved to Germany, I took a long weekend trip to Sweden and I have also been sick since the last time that I posted.
To make a long story short, I applied to teach English at the University of Jena and was accepted as a teacher in the Sprachenzentrum (language centre) where I will be teaching general and scientific English to university students. But I thought you were happy in Barcelona, I hear someone call from the back. That is very true, I answer to this imaginary room, but there were a few factors that caused me to leave, such as the salary/cost ratio of Barcelona. Spanish salaries are typically lower than other European counterparts, but the cost of living in Barcelona is comparable to more expensive countries, meaning it was very hard to save money there. The salaries of freelance teachers was also very low; lower than what a teacher should be paid in a first-world country. Mostly, the factors were positive in the direction of Germany: higher salaries, partner doing a PhD at the same university, looks great on my CV, etc.
I was very happy in Barcelona, but I am looking forward to starting the next chapter of my life in Jena. If I don’t like it, at least it won’t be forever (a PhD has to end at some point, right guys? Guys??).
Within the next day or so, I will resume posting about travel and teaching topics. Hold on tight!
